The Moving Forward Coalition was founded to advance recommendations from a report published in April 2022 by The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM). The report was based on how the U.S. delivers, regulates, finances and measures the quality of nursing home care and outlined seven focus areas for making change. The coalition is using those areas as the framework to identify initiatives, test concepts and promote adoption for lasting improvements.
There are seven committees and one steering committee dedicated to this work:
- Person-Centeredness, Culture Change, Care Planning and Quality of Life
- Staffing & Well-Trained Workforce
- Transparency & Accountability of Finances and Ownership
- Financing System
- System of Quality Assurance
- Quality Measurement & Continuous Quality Improvement
- Health Information Technology
Each committee in the coalition is made up of nursing home residents, certified nursing assistants, administrators, policymakers, advocates, researchers and subject matter experts. The committees have all selected their initial priorities to test and promote over the next 18 months. You can read more about the committees’ priorities and action plans on the website.
The committees have selected their initial set of priorities and have moved from the seven initial goals set by the NASEM report to nine concrete action plans. The coalition celebrated the launch of the Nursing Home Action Plans in a meeting July 19 and held a meeting spotlighting the action plans for Residents’ Goals, Priorities and Preferences on July 26. You can view the recorded presentations on the coalition’s YouTube channel.
There are upcoming meetings that will spotlight the rest of the action plans, including Nursing Home Targeted Recertification Surveys on Aug. 2, and action plan spotlights scheduled throughout August and September.
